From sources to original learning

Asking without putting the answer in the question

Turn a leading statement into an open question and a check of understanding.

This is a free educational pilot. Source readings and editorial examples are separate. No certificate is issued and completed clinical or educational review is not claimed.

The Istanbul textbook's communication chapter brings active listening, open questions and checking understanding together. Rather than immediately fitting a person's statement into a theory, it leaves room to clarify meaning. Information gathering, building the relationship and explanation/planning are separate but related tasks in its interview stages.

Book context / selected passage

Schützenberger's discussion of alliance also emphasises being understood and knowing one's place in the process. We do not combine the sources into a single therapy method. Instead, we ask a shared reading question across different frameworks: is the helper listening to the person's account, or trying to make the person accept the helper's explanation?

Book context / selected passage

Fictional example: 'You feel this way because of your father, don't you?' proposes a cause and asks for agreement. 'Could you describe the situations in which this feeling appears?' is a more open information request. Feedback beginning 'Have I understood correctly that...' offers an opportunity to correct misunderstanding. These are educational sentence comparisons, not authority to conduct clinical interviews.

Original editorial explanation or fictional example

Apply it: fictional worksheet

Fictional sentence: 'Your family must definitely have caused this.' Turn it into a question without an assumed cause, then consider feedback that permits correction. Do not fill the exercise with a personal history.

Example reasoning and its limit

Example: 'Could you describe what you know about this experience and what remains uncertain?' Then: 'I understood this part in this way; could you correct me if needed?' Uncertainty is preserved.

Knowledge check

These are original learning questions, not psychiatric scales. Answers are not transmitted.

1. Which question does not impose an answer in advance?
Answer and explanation

Could you describe this in your own words?

An open question does not narrow the account with a ready-made causal assumption.

2. What is the main function of reflecting back an understanding?
Answer and explanation

Allowing misunderstanding to be corrected

Feedback checks clarity; it is not pressure to agree or a diagnostic algorithm.

3. What does finishing these sentence exercises not show?
Answer and explanation

That professional clinical interviewing competence was acquired

A learning exercise and evaluation of professional competence are different processes.
