Avoidance

Kaçınma

Source and editorial check: 2026-09-19

In everyday language

Avoidance means keeping away from a situation or activity because it feels threatening or distressing. For example, someone may stop using a lift because they expect to feel afraid.

A closer look

In an anxiety-focused behavioural account, avoiding a feared situation can provide immediate relief while leaving the fear unchallenged. The behaviour should be understood in context: its short-term effect and its longer-term consequences may differ.

Editorial interpretation

This entry concerns avoidance linked to fear. It does not label staying away from actual danger, setting boundaries or declining an unwanted activity as a disorder.

Editorial interpretation

The example illustrates a concept; it is not an instruction to confront a risky situation or to conduct exposure treatment without appropriate assessment.
