In everyday language

Anxiety is a feeling of unease about what might happen. It can involve worry, physical tension and changes in behaviour. Occasional anxiety is part of ordinary life.

A closer look

In the NIMH RDoC research framework, anxiety is approached through potential threat: harm is uncertain, ambiguous or relatively distant. This is one operational model for research, rather than a complete definition of every experience called anxiety.
