Not reducing change to one score

Explain why change from baseline and the state reached are different questions.

This is a free educational pilot. Source readings and editorial examples are separate. No certificate is issued and completed clinical or educational review is not claimed.

At the start of the antidepressant chapter, Stahl distinguishes response from remission. Response concerns improvement from baseline; remission concerns the symptom state reached. The illustration shows that substantial improvement can coexist with remaining symptoms. We do not turn its numerical examples into a scoring key for everyone.

Book context / selected passage

The Istanbul textbook considers social and occupational functioning separately. A reduction in one symptom is not identical to how well daily activities can be carried out. Its trauma chapter's attention to prior functioning and present support likewise makes context visible for follow-up.

Book context / selected passage

Original fictional example: a character's symptom chart improves, but returning to work and sleeping regularly remain difficult. We keep both pieces of information rather than delete one. An educational parallel is that answering one question correctly is not the same as mastering a topic or acquiring professional competence. This second comparison is our teaching analogy, not the textbook's clinical definition.

Original editorial explanation or fictional example

Apply it: fictional worksheet

Fictional follow-up worksheet: separate 'symptom reduction', 'carrying out daily tasks', 'the person's goal' and 'a correct quiz answer' into clinical outcome dimensions and an educational result. State why one does not automatically establish another.

Example reasoning and its limit

The first three are different information domains in clinical follow-up; the last belongs to an educational exercise. A quiz score is not a clinical outcome or professional authority.

Knowledge check

These are original learning questions, not psychiatric scales. Answers are not transmitted.

1. Which comparison does response focus on?
Answer and explanation

Change from baseline

In the source's distinction, change and the state reached are different questions.

2. How should improvement with continuing daily difficulties be recorded?
Answer and explanation

Track the dimensions separately and together

Different outcome dimensions do not automatically invalidate each other.

3. What is the comparison between clinical follow-up and a quiz here?
Answer and explanation

An explicitly labelled teaching analogy

An editorial analogy is not presented as a clinical claim found in the source.
