Experience, symptom and diagnosis are not the same

Show the information gap between describing an experience and establishing a diagnosis.

This is a free educational pilot. Source readings and editorial examples are separate. No certificate is issued and completed clinical or educational review is not claimed.

The Istanbul textbook distinguishes mood from affect: a more sustained emotional state versus momentary observable emotional expression. Semiology organises assessment language through such distinctions. Its trauma chapter also separates re-experiencing, emotional numbing and hyperarousal rather than treating them as identical.

Book context / selected passage

The source states that responses after traumatic events are not uniform. A trauma history or one symptom is therefore not a shortcut to the person's entire clinical picture. We do not use the book's 2009 classification placement or time thresholds as current criteria; the lesson practises the distinction between description and classification.

Book context / selected passage

Fictional example: a character speaks little today, but we do not know the preceding week. Information is missing between the observation 'quiet' and the conclusion 'depressed'. A startle when entering a room likewise does not establish a trauma diagnosis. Recording the observation matters; enlarging it into an unsupported verdict does not.

Original editorial explanation or fictional example

Apply it: fictional worksheet

Fictional classification: 'Spoke little today', 'Reported feeling sad for a week', 'Definitely has disorder X'. Discuss the first two as observation and self-report, and the third as a diagnostic inference not yet supported.

Example reasoning and its limit

Observation and self-report are different sources of information. Neither alone replaces diagnosis; the third statement requires further assessment.

Knowledge check

These are original learning questions, not psychiatric scales. Answers are not transmitted.

1. In the source's distinction, what does affect most directly describe?
Answer and explanation

Momentary observable emotional expression

This is the source's semiological term, not a replacement for a person's whole mental state.

2. What cannot be concluded from a single startle observation?
Answer and explanation

That PTSD has been established

Diagnostic assessment requires more information and appropriate competence than one observation provides.

3. How is the 2009 textbook used in this workshop?
Answer and explanation

Separating its descriptions from their currency limits

The period and source context remain visible; old classification is not silently declared current.
