B04 · Reading Feeling Good critically

What does a study establish?

Original educational selection. Book context, editorial interpretation and external-source checks are separate. Contemporary clinical review and an empirical learner pilot are not complete. No diagnosis, treatment or certificate is provided.

Learning objectives

When reading a research claim, ask who received what and under which comparison. The abstract of the 1995 paper associated with the book’s bibliotherapy account compares a minimal-contact intervention with a waiting list. It does not establish superiority to medication within that trial. The book’s PET citation concerns an OCD sample. These boundaries do not make the studies worthless; they define the questions the studies can address. Correct answers in this package do not determine a person’s mental health.

Fictional exercise

Fictional editorial meeting: A learning team proposes, “Research on a book was positive, so our course is clinically proven.” Another editor adds sample, comparator, measured outcome and studied product to the source table. The team sees that its own course was not studied and changes the headline.

Example reasoning

Using a source does not transfer its clinical outcomes to a new product. Learning the name and purpose of a scale does not confer competence to administer it or diagnose. This draft awaits educational review and provides no qualification or clinical competence.

Knowledge check

Answers are not submitted or stored. These are not health or personality tests.

1. What cannot be concluded solely from a positive bibliotherapy result against a waiting list?
Rationale for every option

That bibliotherapy outperformed medication in that same trial.
Correct. There is no medication arm in that comparison; the conclusion cannot exceed it.

That the study used a comparison condition.
This narrow statement is supported by the waiting-list comparison.

That the intervention was considered worth studying.
Conducting the trial is consistent with this limited statement; it is not a superiority claim.

2. Which description best fits the OCD-PET study cited by the book?
Rationale for every option

Direct proof that reading Feeling Good changes brain structure in depression.
This changes the sample, intervention and measured outcome.

A study of treatment-associated glucose metabolism changes in an OCD sample.
Correct. It preserves the sample and measurement without transferring outcomes to another product.

A study proving that all psychological difficulties arise from one brain region.
The study does not address all psychological difficulties or prove a single cause.

3. What does answering every question correctly in this learning draft indicate?
Rationale for every option

That the person does not have depression.
The questions do not measure symptoms or diagnose; this conclusion is unsupported.

That the person is qualified to administer clinical scales.
Answering learning questions does not confer professional authority or clinical competence.

That the person answered these particular conceptual distinctions correctly.
Correct. It is a limited learning indicator, not evidence of health status, accreditation or clinical effectiveness.
