Observation, interpretation and cause: three different statements

Identify observation, personal meaning and causal inference separately in an explanation.

The genosociogram in Psychogenealogy places important events and relationships on a family map. The Istanbul textbook's semiology organises observed and reported experiences into assessment domains. These are different organising tasks: one makes family narratives visible, the other structures clinical description. Neither map by itself establishes one past event as the cause of a present difficulty.

Our workshop uses three reading columns: What was recorded? What meaning was given to it? What causal conclusion was drawn? The first holds the document or report, the second identifies the interpreter, and the third holds the explanation that still requires testing. This is an editorial reading tool, not a diagnostic model.

Fictional example: a family record shows two generations moving home in the same month. One character associates that month with separation. Another claims every present anxiety comes from that date. These are a record, personal meaning and a causal generalisation. The second may matter to the person without proving the third. The aim is to respect experience while keeping explanatory limits visible.

Fictional worksheet: 'The archive records a move in 1998. Deniz describes that year as a rupture. The move causes all of Deniz's present difficulties.' Classify the three statements as record, interpretation and causal claim.

Example reasoning and its limit

First: record. Second: Deniz's interpretation. Third: a causal claim requiring further evidence. A family map does not establish the third.
