Stress is the mental and bodily response to difficult or demanding circumstances. It can help us respond to a challenge, but too much or prolonged stress can affect wellbeing.
A closer look
WHO describes stress as tension or concern arising in a difficult situation. The term covers a response rather than one diagnosis. Effects vary between people and circumstances; the presence of stress alone does not establish a mental disorder.
Keep the stressful circumstance and the response to it distinct when reading research. A study may measure events, perceived strain or physiological responses; the word stress alone does not tell you which.
